August 2008

Technically impaired thus photoless. Takeoff was a sunset stunner overlooking New York City. On my Qantas flight, I watched a documentary about a legendary Australian lightweight boxing showdown in ’85. The guy’s aged 30, nose is broken in the 11th or so round, and he still pulls out a victory over the reigning 20 yr-old… in 15 rounds. Yeah.

Brooklyn, NY: Magical Box

Spent the day in a pre-Australia whirlwind. Leaving tomorrow. After a long day, I ate wild boar and opened a magic box (pictured).

The last ever photograph of my short-lived not-quite-touring vehicle (on the right). Two
hundred bucks to a salvage joint in Long Island. Not because I have a crack
habit. The minivan was revealed to be a cash-sucking vortex of rotting
mechanics. It lasted slightly longer than my other attempt at NYC car
ownership… three months instead of two.

I endured political windbagging on TV to catch Stevie Wonder perform. At first I thought his harmonic sensibility had been stuck in Baggage Claim at the Denver Airport, but then realized he was simply struggling with pulling off a complicated barbershop quartet-style vocal performance in an 80,000-seat stadium. Once he settled in behind his keyboard and thumped out ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered,’ his supremacy was duly restored. I saw him only once in person, at Radio City Music Hall. It was an unfortunate waste of his genius — twas the finale of a VH-1 ‘Divas’ taping; he was helped to the stage by one of the Backstreet Boys so that they could join a chorus of a dozen or so others in chanting a never-ending refrain of Aretha’s “Freeway of Love.”

Brooklyn, NY: Long Song List

The song list on the studio wall is comfortably full now. I’m leaving to tour Australia on Sunday. I spent today’s studio time on a new one about the city. It has a crunchy programmed beat and synth key lead and is something about a hot metal heart.

Rapturous. And impossible to reproduce though I snuck this picture. Huge landscape paintings with big gobs of light drenching down from the heavens. I had that verge-of-tear feeling the whole time.

New York, NY: Amy in East Village

My mom’s visiting New York, so we went to the East Village to hear Amy (Allison) sing her perfect songs at Banjo Jim’s.

Brooklyn, NY: Watchdog

Sailor the dog barked and growled protectively when he heard me singing a particularly plaintive note in the studio. It was the song ‘Estranged.’ Dog barks aren’t particularly convenient for recording but I do appreciate the gesture.
