A bit of a revelatory day in my studio. I re-discovered a recording of ‘Old-Fashioned’ that I’d recorded with Scott at Headgear almost two years ago, with Alan drumming and me playing bass. I’d fleshed out the song in my home studio but hadn’t laid ears on it since then. It’s got a soul ballad vibe to it. I really dig it. I also re-worked ‘Overboard’ with the lap steel lead in two octaves. I’ve finally schooled myself on the sequencer software sufficiently enough that I can now sharpen my focus on sculpting the emotional arc of the music. I’m finally feeling delightfully buried in the snowdrift of this project.

I added strings to ‘Overboard’ and finally have a working version that I can tolerate… I’m slowly sculpting the overall sonic timbre of this next set of songs… the process feels agonizingly slow, yet righteous…

The flowers that my mom sent me are dense and lush and cool to the touch. They remind me of underwater coral.

Back in the East Village after a kinda thrilling day in my home studio back in Brooklyn. I’m finally starting to be able to stir together my disparate blobs of knowledge about sequencing and recording software, composition, theory… and enlist them in the service of songs. I just have to be patient with the learning curve. This all feels necessary.

A tiny bust of Chopin oversees my labours in my studio. My mom gave it to me. We’d wanted (and still hope to find) a big plaster bust, but all we could rustle up was a tiny faux bronze one. If anyone has a good one, please write. Anyhow, I studied hard today and finally have the MicroKorg keyboard working as a MIDI controller for Reason 4.0 with ProTools 7.4 betwixt them. There’s poetry in here somewhere.
