For the most part, Florida land is swampy thus has to be drained
before anything can be built on it. So most housing communities here
feature a ‘lake,’ Aka a glorified drainage ditch. The drainage ditch I
walk to each day plays host to some lovely birds I’ve ne’er seen up
North – wood storks, Ibis and the like. Florida skies are lit up with
lots of sounds. Recently, an American Coot in this ‘lake’ built a nest
in the reeds and commenced to lay nine speckled brown eggs. Nine
hatched. The little dears survived a legendary thunderstorm on day
two. Eight remain alive. They’re really coming into thier own. I’ll
attempt to photograph them but thier miniscule cuteness is a challenge
to capture.
