Brooklyn, NY: ‘Tutorial’ LP

I trapped a baby panda and ‘rebranded’ it as a dog named Sailor. I worked yet another day on the song ‘Strange Days/Estranged.’ Progress feels relentlessly sluggish, but it’s mostly because I’m exploring new technologies as I write and sculpt the songs. Perhaps I should name the album ‘Tutorial.’

Brooklyn, NY: Mommy, Where Do Songs Come From?

Almost finished writing ‘Strange Days,’ and wondering: Did I really rip off a melody from ‘I Will Survive,’ or are all songwriters simply unconsciously drawing from the Primordial Well o’ Melody…plucking fruit from Archetypal Tree o’ Song…redeeming vehicles from the Transcendent Tow-Pound of Tunecraft?

Today, my studio progress was trudging until about 3pm, when a cranky little song materialized while I was programming a triplet drumbeat. Its working title is ‘Strange Days.’ I hope to finalize a demo tomorrow.

I spent an hour fixing my Ernie Ball VP JR volume pedal, using a bent paper clip to thread string onto a tightly-wound spring and a couple pulleys. Pitched cardboard shipping boxes that studio gear came in weeks ago. Made lists. Corresponded with Laura about what songs I’ll perform in her very intriguing musical program in a few weeks (she may finally have given me the much-longed-for excuse to perform a Buffy-Sainte Marie song). Published the dates of my September Australian tour with Ash Grunwald. Downloaded my monthly allocation of songs from EMusic.com (…Prokofiev piano… reggae from Mick Hucknall’s label…Django Reinhardt). Ran errands in the heat using my minivan which desperately requires a new front left ball joint. Today, ’twas simply too hot to consider holing up in my studio.

New York, NY: Yaz at Terminal 5

On ‘Nobody’s Diary,’ the opening tune, Alison Moyet’s body was stiff behind the mic, like a belting opera singer trying to manage a ballad at a karaoke bar. But that all changed. I dunno if it was the fact that she finally yanked out her in-ear monitors, or the two sifters of cognac she put away, but by the end, she was bopping around like the lead in ‘Hairspray’ — a few flat notes were a small price to pay for her exuberance.
