Wow. Our soundcheck at the Zipper Theater, which is located on mercifully uncool 37th Street, sounded marvellous and arena-like, despite a very uncomplicated monitor system (1 mix for everyone!). The staff is adorable. We’re amped to play.

Michael (my manager) is in town from L.A., so he visited my hood. We
strolled up to his old brownstone apartment on Berkeley Street and I let him
tell me, once again, how utterly sketchy the neighborhood was “back in those
days.”

Tonight I recorded a rough demo of ‘Overboard’ (the name changed). Just lap steel and voice through the same amp. I’ll play the song for the first time at tomorrow night’s show. Steve Martin was on Charlie Rose tonight: “When people ask me ‘how do you make it in show business’ or whatever, what I always tell them – and nobody ever takes note of it cause its not the answer they wanted to hear – what they want to hear is here’s how you get an agent, here’s how you write a script, here’s how you do this. But I always say, ‘Be so good they can’t ignore you.’ If somebody’s thinking, ‘How can I be really good?,’ people are going to come to you. It’s much easier doing it that way than going to cocktail parties.”

Awoke sick today, but handled a bunch of business stuff and in a subtle
fever state, began writing a song, ‘Overcoat,’ in the key of B. (Wow, that
just inspired a truly epic album title for someone’s New Age recording:
“Songs in the Key of Be.”
If you know any pan flute players or Sufi chanters who might benefit from that album title, feel free to grant it to them with my blessings. No charge.)

My snow-delayed flight arrived just in time for rehearsal for the Saturday night show. Once again, while playing, I found myself feeling very moved that these musicians and friends know my songs by heart and play them so passionately. Anyhow, in this pic, we’d just rocked a 4-minute hair metal outro for the Def Leppard ballad that we’ll be playing (video of recent Australian live performance HERE).

Then we were stilled by the news about Heath Ledger. Sigh.

Frostbiting outdoors. Back to NYC tomorrow for a full band rehearsal for this Saturday’s show.
