I flew into Pittsburgh today for the ‘Homecoming’ movie shoot tomorrow morning. During my college years in the 90s, I had some sublime music experiences right here on post-industrial Smallman Street, at the long-departed pair of sister clubs, Metropol and Rosebud. I saw Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings for the first of many times (opening for Richard Buckner, methinks). I saw Belly (with some new band called ‘Radiohead’ opening for them). Boy George. Cowboy Junkies. Skinny Puppy. Howard Jones chastizing the chattering audience (Come on, dude: you’re playing only new material, accompanied solely by a bongo player chick!). And a local band with whom I was intimate that hugely influenced my my music years later – Manifold Splendour.
