Cam (Loeppky, Weakerthans’ longtime audio engineer) spent a lot of the day sitting in my leather chair. I plan to spend a lot of time in that chair after our last show of the tour tomorrow in Boston tomorrow.

Today, Halloween, is a day off. I slept a lot, and took a couple of the Weakerthans posse on a walking of my Brooklyn neighborhood, Park Slope. This is Jim Bryson and Cam Loeppky. Good boys.

Webster Hall was packed. Our show felt great and the Weakerthans (pictured) were fab. We have Halloween Day off before the last show of the tour, in Boston.

As we soundchecked, Webster Hall (formerly The Ritz) was being decorated for Halloween… which was a curious exercise, being as the venerable, crumbling old club already feels like a haunted house. This is Greta (on the right) who’s playing keyboards and singing with us tonight. Alan Bezozi’s playing drums. I love playing with them.

Back home in sense-drenching New York City. Walking to soundcheck at Webster Hall after a coffee with Rich at 9th Street Espresso, I flashed back to my earliest thoughts about wanting to move here from Pittsburgh in the late 90s… I remember loving that in New York, there were fresh flowers for sale on almost every sidewalk, as at this deli on1st Avenue. I’ve still never seen the gaudily vivid dyed daisies…blue…yellow…pink…anywhere but here.

Tonight’s venue, the Trocadero, has changed little since its days as a burlesque club decades ago. The ceilings are incredibly high so the vocals float endlessly, as in a church. This’ll be a pleasure.

I dropped by the WXPN/World Cafe compound today and had lunch with Karl Mullen, an old friend from our mutual Pittsburgh days, before I moved to NYC and he moved to Philly to book World Cafe Live when it opened several years ago. Karl’s paintings are primordial and lush - one hangs in my apartment in Brooklyn. Also saw Bruce Warren who always hooks me up with new music to check out when I pass through town — the kind of stuff the kids are listening to these days.
